Follow arrows in log display?

Norbert Nemec
IIRC there used to be a feature to jump to the other end of a long,
split branch line in the log view by simply double-clicking one end. IN
3EA7, this does not work any more.

Is there any simple way to follow those long, missing lines?

We took this kind of mouse-navigation out of the graph, but Edit|Select Previous Commit should do what you are looking for.

The Log view has been reworked completely and we considered this hidden feature not widely used resp. known. On the other hand, it would have required relatively much effort to port to SWT. Did we underestimate its usefulness here?

Re: Follow arrows in log display?

Andrew Herron
I don't use it very often, but when I do I really *really* need it and
it tends to be needed a lot in quick succession. For example I work on a
legacy codebase with old release branches that have fixes backported only
once every few months, and this lets me view that branch in the context of
all branches instead of just by itself.

I could just assign a keyboard shortcut, I guess, but clicking in the log
graph is much better :)

Cheers,
Andy

Guess, it depends on the kind of repositories that you work on.

When you have the kind of project that contains many arrows (as ours
tend to), then a powerful feature to follow them is essential. The
"Select Previous Commit" kind-of works, but it is really awkward to use.
Especially when you are trying to understand a complex history, the
extra-bit of thinking necessary to choose the correct "Previous Commit"
really gets in the way and breaks the visual impression that you build
up in your head.

On my/our side, I'll not stop using SmartGit if this feature is not re-implemented, but it was practical and somewhat intuitive. A key shortcut would also do the job.

Re: Follow arrows in log display?

WORMSS
Sorry to dig up this old threads.

I was wondering if there was a way to edit the limit for when a line is replaced with an arrow?

I know in some super big repos it may be advisable to edit this limit for performance reasons but ours is quite simple but just have alot of commits between some merge commits. Be nice to higher the limit for those odd times when you are showing someone new and not have to explain that the arrows do something different to them seeing these lines.

If the limit isn't editable, I do not require the option to be added if it would be a hassle.

Unfortunately, the arrow distance limit and the background loading of log entries is related and a large limit here would currently result in loading the entire log. Hence, this would be no easy change.
